Description
Under protection of the UNESCO, QENP was declared a Biosphere-Reserve since it is a jewel under the National Parks.
The fauna and flora of the park are rich and the landscape has a wide range from savannah with Acacia and Candelabra trees, rain forests, thick Papyrus-Swamps, craters and crater lakes to the water body of Lake Edward. The environment in the Queen Elizabeth National Park is miraculous and awaits you with one of the richest varieties within one National Park worldwide.
The National Park is habitat to about 100 mammals. Also within the park are numerous kinds of insects and butterflies. Most thrilling though is the amount of 616 different species of birds so far confirmed in the same park! That makes QENP the most favored destination amongst those that are interested in bird watching. It is each ornithologist’s El Dorado and for example different species of herons such as the Goliath Heron, the Yellow-billed, Marabou stork, Saddle-billed Stork, the African Fish Eagle and a variety of kingfisher are found here.
Elephants, hippopotamus, zebras, Duiker, Siatunga and Topi antelopes, Bohor Reedbuck, warthogs, the rare Giant Forest Hogs, mongoose and the Uganda Kob are numerous in the park. Of the predators, the most common are the lions, leopards and hyenas whose typical sounds can be heard during evening and night hours.
Mweya is a peninsula with interesting shores and offers a breathtaking view of the Rwenzori-Mountains. This is the spot where one of Uganda’s best safari hotels, "Mweya Safari Lodge", is located.
The transition to the Ishasha-sector of QENP is famous for its tree-climbing-lions, the Kyambura-Gorge for chimpanzees, Maramagambo-Forest for numerous primates and forest birds and the crater lakes for being seasonal habitat to flamingos.
Activities include:
- Game Drives are the preferred and most exciting activity within the National Park. Best done with a Four Wheel Drive for the best views.
- Boat trip on Kazinga-Channel. Other than the uncountable species of birds you will also see enormous populations of hippopotamus and buffaloes, Nile Monitors and maybe a python.
- Chimpanzee tracking in the Kyambura-Gorge
- Forest walks where you discover caves with bats in Maramagambo
Visiting Time
All year round is a good visit. However, it is necessary to travel with a Four Wheel Drive especially during the rainy season.
