In the east of Uganda, at the boarder to Kenya

Description
Mount Elgon is a 4.321 m high inactive extinct volcano which used to be higher than the Kilimanjaro is today. However, this was more than 10 million years ago, in prehistorical times.

Although Mount Elgon is right at the Uganda-Kenya boarder, its highest summit, the Wagagai Peak, lies within Uganda and can be perfectly reached from this side. The boarders of the National Park are made up by the 1.147 km² of the massif.

Within the area Mount Elgon is an important local resource for water and its slopes protect a number of different kinds of vegetation. The biggest zone is covered in typical afro-mountainous vegetation which leads to the zone of heather and tree-land, open moors and bamboo-forests. Botanists and friends of nature will get exited at the view of giant groundsels and lobelias and giant heather.

Mount Elgon is habitat to numerous different animals. These include among others, buffaloes, smaller species of antelopes, Bushbucks, leopards and hyenas.
In addition, various primates such as baboons, guenons and forest monkeys can be seen. More than 300 kinds of birds have so far been spotted in the region of which some can not be found anywhere else.

Other attractions are beautiful caves near Budadiri town and the hot springs within the crater.
