It is not a secret that the cradle of mankind is in East Africa. The key word here is “evolution”.
Archaeological findings like those of 1974 in Hadar in Southern Ethiopia where D. Johanson and T. Gray discovered “Lucy” are a true sensation. “Lucy” is the oldest human skeleton ever found and was named after the Beatles-song that was played in the archeologist’s radio the moment they first saw it. The skeleton is 3, 2 million years old and is the remaining of a female Australopithecus afarensis, a “real” early human being (hominid).
Due to these facts it is not a surprise that most African ethnical groups and their cultures are significantly older than for example the European. Who does not know the numerous stories about the mystical life of the Kenyan Masai, the martial Zulu or the astonishing Bushmen from the tribe of the San in Namibia?
It is a pity that there is not too much knowledge about these original cultures left since writing was not common until the “white man” came.
With the colonialisation, scientists and researchers started to explore the African continent and its many different societies and cultures. Some of them literally risked their lives and managed to produce those materials from which we until today gain a lot of knowledge about already forgotten and lost cultures.
For most guests the main reason to travel to East Africa is the breathtaking landscape with its immense diversity of animals and plants. However, more and more visitors are interested in cultural exploration as well and value Africa’s old way of life and traditions. They focus on historical sites and at the same time on contemporary customs and cultures.
Uganda for example is rich in different cultures. Actually, there are more than 60 ethnic groups and a minimum of 30 counted different cultures and even more subcultures. Some of them are truly outstanding such as the Karamojong in the North-East, warriors and nomads that still live their traditions strongly, or the Batwa, the pygmies living in the South-West.
EQUATORIAL WILD SAFARIS focuses on these cultural explorations and as we always adjust to the wishes of our guests we offer a modern and interested approach to combine the adventure of discovering African nature and wildlife with the possibility to get to know more about history and African way of life, traditions and cultures on a high level and, if asked for, under scientific guidance.
